Creating a Cover for My NexGen Writer
As a working court reporter, I've used many steno machines over the years, but Stenograph’s NexGen was special. I wanted to keep it looking pristine, which meant finding a way to protect it from the inevitable dust that accumulates in any office environment, and I wanted a portable protective cover that wasn’t the traveling zippered mini case. Most covers I found were made from fabric (which hides the machine completely) and reminded me of a shower cap, which I thought was tacky.
That's when I decided to take matters into my own hands.
I started working with a manufacturing facility that specialized in custom vacuum form fabrication. I explained exactly what I needed: a cover that would protect my NexGen while maintaining its aesthetic appeal.
Working with the manufacturer was a fascinating process. I also needed a CAD guy, Alec, who would use precise measurements of my NexGen so that we could print a 3D model to ensure the cover would fit perfectly.
Henry, my manufacturer, explained how they would heat-form the PETG to create smooth curves that would complement the machine's design. I particularly appreciated his attention to detail and persistence in achieving the exact curvature and specific cutouts as requested.
When I approved the final design and received the finished cover, I was thrilled. It fit my NexGen perfectly, and the clarity of the PETG was even better than I'd imagined. The material is thick enough to provide real protection but doesn't detract from the NexGen's appearance at all.
Using the cover has been a game-changer for my peace of mind. I no longer worry about dust settling into the keys during lunch breaks or overnight. The cover is light enough to remove and replace easily, but sturdy enough that I'm confident it's providing real protection.
My ClearTech NexGen Covers are up for sale - I hope you love it as much as I do!
